The agent
What the Desyn agent can do, how to talk to it, examples of conversational edits, and how runs, plans, questions and undo work.
On this page
The agent is a design collaborator that can see your whole canvas and edit it. Open it with ⌘CtrlJ, type what you want, and watch it work in the run log while the layers it touches glow.
How it understands your design#
Before it changes anything, the agent reads a structural description of the page: every layer with its type, name, role, position and text; the palette and fonts in use; the typographic scale; alignment lines and spacing rhythm; a ranking of what is visually most important; and a list of issues such as low contrast, tiny text, overflowing text or uneven spacing. It also knows what you have selected, so "this" and "these" mean what you think. When it needs to judge the look, it renders a preview and looks at it.
What it can do#
The agent has a toolbox and chooses the tools it needs for each request:
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Understand | read_design, read_selection, query_elements, render_preview, critique |
| Build and edit | create_elements, update_elements, delete_elements, duplicate_elements, group_elements, ungroup, set_roles, set_style |
| Arrange | arrange — align, distribute, stack, grid, auto-layout and match size |
| Text | set_text, rewrite_text, translate_text |
| Pages | add_page, delete_page, reorder_pages, resize_page |
| Brand and templates | apply_brand, search_templates, apply_template |
| Assets | generate_image, generate_svg, remove_background, inpaint, outpaint, upscale, mockup, trace_to_vector, search_stock, search_icons |
| Process | plan, ask_user, run_workflow, finish |
All edits go through the document's normal transactions, so they appear live for collaborators, can be undone in one step, and show up in version history.
Examples#
Editing:
Make the headline two lines and give it more breathing room.Swap the photo for something warmer and more editorial. Keep the crop.Turn these three paragraphs into a feature row with an icon above each.Asking:
Why does this slide feel cluttered? Fix the two biggest problems. Is the text accessible? List anything below 4.5:1 contrast.Whole-design changes:
Make this feel more premium: serif headings, more whitespace, a muted palette.
Don't touch the logo or the prices.Add a closing slide with a QR code to desyn.app and a one-line call to action.Translate every page to German and fix anything that overflows.Writing good requests#
- Say what to keep. "Keep the product photo and the price" is respected strictly.
- Point at things. Select layers before asking, or name them: "the subhead under the title".
- Describe the outcome, not the steps. "Make the CTA stand out more" lets the agent choose between size, color, contrast and position.
- Iterate. Short follow-ups work well: "warmer", "less", "undo the background change but keep the rest".
Plans, questions and checkpoints#
For larger requests the agent first writes a short plan — the steps it intends to take — and shows it in the run log. If something is ambiguous it can ask you a question and pause until you answer, offering choices when it can. Before destructive bulk changes (for example deleting many layers or rewriting every page) it asks for confirmation.
You can cancel a run at any time. Changes made so far stay and can be undone as one step.
Modes#
- Edit (default) — changes the design.
- Generate — builds new pages or designs from a brief. See generating designs.
- Chat — answers questions and gives feedback without changing anything.
Undo and history#
Each request is one undo step, no matter how many layers changed. If the agent made several commits during one run, they are grouped by the run so ⌘CtrlZ reverts them together. In version history they appear with an "AI:" label and the request that caused them.
Limits#
The agent stops after a maximum number of steps and a cost cap per run, and you can run up to three agent runs or workflows at the same time. On the hosted Pro plan each request costs credits; see credits & fair use.
